I am thinking of making my own bridal bouquet. I have some experience in flower arranging but can you please offer me some advice about hand-tied bridal bouquets?
Hand tied bouquets are made by arranging all the heads of the flowers at the same height, foliage is then used amongst the flowers or as a collar. Start by cutting the stems level, usually a few inches longer than the bride would need to hold them, keeping the 1/3 , 2/3 proportion in mind. Finish the bouquet by binding the stems with satin or organza ribbon to finish.
We would suggest you practice with tulips or single carnations first of all to get a feel for the technique. Look at pictures of styles you like and follow the materials as closely as possible and practice once or twice before the day so that you will feel more relaxed, for this reason it's a good idea to keep the style simple. The type of flower you choose is very important, roses are always a good choice as they tend to be more robust and long lasting as well as beautiful!
If you have a trial run with one bouquet in the flowers of your choice you can gauge the quantities required - you wouldn't want to be short on the morning! As you know from your flower arranging, preparation is the key - make sure that you have quantities worked out, plenty of room to prepare the bouquets and somewhere cool to store the flowers.
