I have some experience in flower arranging but can you please offer me some advice about hand-tied bridal bouquets?

Hand tied bouquets are made by arranging all the heads of the flowers at the same height, foliage is then used amongst the flowers or as a collar. Start by cutting the stems level, usually a few inches longer than the bride would need to hold them, keeping the 1/3 , 2/3 proportion in mind. Finish the bouquet by binding the stems with satin or organza ribbon to finish.

We would suggest you practice with tulips or single carnations first of all to get a feel for the technique. Look at pictures of styles you like and follow the materials as closely as possible and practice once or twice before the day so that you will feel more relaxed, for this reason it's a good idea to keep the style simple. The type of flower you choose is very important, roses are always a good choice as they tend to be more robust and long lasting as well as beautiful!

If you have a trial run with one bouquet in the flowers of your choice you can gauge the quantities required - you wouldn't want to be short on the morning! As you know from your flower arranging, preparation is the key - make sure that you have quantities worked out, plenty of room to prepare the bouquets and somewhere cool to store the flowers.

Wedding Flowers for Petite Brides

If you are petite then it's important choose a bouquet that is also petite and neatly shaped so the bouquet doesn’t swamp you or hide your dress.

Perhaps consider a neat compact bouquet similar in shape to the one designed by Mary Jane Vaughan here: Wedding Bouquet Idea . You could choose also choose traditional roses instead of the David Austin Roses shown or a mixture.

If you choose a formal posy like this one with a perfectly round shape, compact and domed maybe give it added sparkle with diamante or stems bound with luxurious ribbon or fabric. If your dress has beautiful details that you won’t want to hide, opt for a simple bouquet with complementary details such beading or a brooch.

Alternatively perhaps a smaller sized teardrop or cascade bouquet may be worth considering - By drawing the eye downwards these designs can help to make you look slimmer.

Ask your florist to scale the length of the cascade and teardrop to your height. What flowers should I choose? and how can I find a suitable florist?

Many of the hotels that offer weddings abroad have an in-house florist or a local florist hat they work closely with. If you are choosing to get married overseas it makes sense to have something appropriate flower-wise a cottage garden bouquet would look incongruous in the Caribbean, for instance!

Local florists can advise on indigenous flowers, or locally-grown crops, that would suit being used in a wedding bouquet. If your venue does not have its own florist, or is remote from a retail centre where you could pick one up, Interflora has links with overseas florists through its network and might be able to connect you to a florist in your chosen location.

Question from My Wedding Flower Ideas answered by Andrea Caldecourt at the Flowers & Plants Association

My colour theme is ivory and lilac, and my budget is small as we are paying for the wedding ourselves. I only want a small bouquet and something similar in a smaller design for my flower girl. Is there anything you can suggest or anywhere that I can look at pictures?

First of all there are some lovely choices for this colour theme - roses are the perfect focal flower for your bouquet. You could try Blue Curiosa or Cool Water which have a blue tone (if you put these names into google images you can get an idea of what they look like!!) alternatively a cream Bianca or Akito rose is lovely. For added interest there are lots of flowers in this colour palette to choose from including freesia, agapanthus, hyacinth, veronica, brodia or lisianthus.

Choose a rose for your focal point then fill out with contrasting less expensive and foliage. Also go for a style such as a hand tie rather than a wired style as the wired styles are more work for your florist which can add to the cost. For the ladies corsage perhaps choose 2 roses in same variety as your bouquet with beads and or beaded wire to add extra detail and interest.

A good florist should also be an excellent source of ideas and inspiration - if you are clear with them about how much you have to spend they will be able to help you choose flowers to suit your budget and your style. Can you suggest wedding flowers that will be suitable for a classic English country style summer wedding - scented flowers would be lovely .

There are plenty of beautiful English country garden style flowers around in the summer so you will have lots of choice. One thing to remember is that it can get quite hot and humid inside a marquee unlike an air conditioned building - and some of the more delicate country-style flowers may not stand up well if the day is very hot. So I have chosen some flowers for you that are guaranteed to make it through the day looking as fresh as when they started!

There are some new English roses named after Shakespearean heroines, which have been bred recently, which look like old-fashioned garden roses, but have the long life of a florist rose. They also have a beautiful scent and come in soft peach and pink, so these would be ideal.
Sweet peas would be an obvious choice for fragrance, beautiful pastel colours, and for typical Englishness; ask your florist to ensure they have plenty of water to drink during the day to ensure maximum freshness.

Delphinium and larkspur cannot be beaten if you want height - their lacy delicate stems give a sense of drama to an arrangement, and they come in soft shades of blue, peach and pink which tone in well with most colour themes.

Hydrangeas would also look lovely and you can get these as pot plants or as cut flowers; they come in blues, whites, pinks and pale green and their huge flower heads have real impact.
Don’t forget foliage too the reason cottage gardens look so ´right´; is that they have plenty of green between the flowers. Variegated ivy trails and umbrella fern would be delicate enough to suit the theme and add a welcome relaxing note of green. The elegantly weeping tails of green hanging amaranthus, or love lies bleeding, looks remarkably right when used in relaxed arrangements. Molucella (bells of Ireland) with a faint lovely rice-pudding scent also adds a cool touch of green.
Image Copyright : David Austin Roses Question orginally answered by Andrea Caldecourt of Flowers and Plants Association see their wedding flowers area.

Wedding Flowers - Blue Wedding Flowers

Would you be able to advise me of flowers that are in season late May, early June please.
